Weird and Wonderful The Everglades is in South Florida. It has hot, wet summers. It has mild, dry winters. Water, plants, and animals are everywhere.

More Than a Swamp The Everglades has many different areas. Some areas have fresh water. Tall trees grow there.

Some areas have salt water. The trees that grow there have long roots.

Some areas have tall plants called sawgrass. Its leaves are sharp, like a saw. Some areas have woods. Tall trees there grow close together.

A Park Is Born For a long time, the Everglades did not change. Then, some people wanted to farm the land. They also wanted to build homes there.
