Dragon Master PETRA MARIS HOME Petra grew up in Helas, in the Southern Lands. She currently lives in Remus, where she studies with Dragon Master Tessa and Felix the wizard. But she returns home often. STRENGTHS Petra was afraid of being a Dragon Master at first, but she overcame her fears to save Drake and King Roland. She is a good researcher who can find answers to questions quickly. She communicates with a four-headed dragon, which is four times more difficult than communicating with one dragon! Like Heru, she loves to read about dragons. She and Heru write to each other and share notes. Veggie Master Petra does not eat meat. Her favorite food is hummus - a spread made of chickpeas, a sesame-seed paste, and garlic.

BACKGROUND Petra's parents, Daria and Zale, work in the Great Library of Helas. Her great-great-great-great-uncle Cosmo was a dragon expert. Petra grew up among rows and rows of books from all over the world. THE SOUTHERN LANDS The Southern Lands are located southeast of Bracken. Helas, the land where Petra comes from, contains several busy cities. People from all over the world sail to Helas's coasts. Many people stay and live there. They bring their unique customs and food with them. Helas is not far from the land of Vitus and the city of Remus, where Petra now trains with her friend, Tessa. -Griffith

The weather in the Southern Lands is usually much warmer than it is in Bracken. Many delicious vegetables grow there, as well as fruits so bright and colorful, they look like jewels. Favorite Fruit Petra loves to eat figs, which grow in warm parts of the world. They are small purple or green fruits with a honey-like taste. THE GREAT LIBRARY OF HELAS This library was built more than 1,000 years ago. It was the idea of Delia, a teacher in ancient Helas. She convinced Emperor Nikolas to construct it and fill it with books. Today this library holds more than 200,000 books and scrolls from around the world. Reading Room Visitors can take books from the shelves and read them here. The books are so rare that they are not usually allowed to be taken from the library. Subject Groups Books are grouped into thirty-six different subjects. Some of them include: history, medicine, mathematics, poetry, magic, and law.

Natural Light A skylight keeps the reading room bright during the day. Statue of Delia This statue watches over visitors. Keeping Crack Library caretakers keep a record of each book's title, author, and subject.
