To the Dragon Master Reading This Book, Griffith, the Royal Wizard of Bracken, is a dear friend of mine. We were having tea (that he made appear by magic) and talking about dragons, of course. Griffith was telling me about all the new dragons his Dragon Masters had encountered recently. But he said that he had no time to write down the information he was learning. "I can help you!" KING ROLAND AND QUEEN ROSE King Roland and Queen Rose rule two kingdoms together— Bracken and Arkwood. King Roland the Bold has been interested in dragons since he was a young man. After becoming king at age twenty-two, he began his search for dragons. He even thought about creating a dragon army to protect his kingdom. Queen Rose the Just is very interested in the well-being of the dragons. She encourages the king to take good care of them. Many believe she is the reason he gave up his plans for a dragon army!

KING ROLAND'S QUEST FOR DRAGONS At just fourteen years old, Roland fought in a fierce battle to protect Bracken Castle. The castle was saved, but Roland lost his grandfather, King Harold, in the fight. When King Roland took the throne, he worried that other kingdoms might attack the land. He knew that Bracken's army might not be large enough to keep enemies at bay. Then he had an idea: What if dragons could protect the kingdom? He asked Griffith to help him learn about dragons around the world. The king sent soldiers out to capture all kinds of dragons. Griffith thought it was cruel to take the dragons from their homes. The dragons were sometimes wild and upset when they were brought to the castle, but Griffith couldn't communicate with them. He knew that he needed to find Dragon Masters for the dragons right away!
