UNIT 14 EDUCATION academic adj. Academic describes something or someone related to learning. Luke is studying in a famous academic building. curriculum n. A curriculum is a set of subjects that will be taught. These books are part of the school's curriculum this year. diploma n. A diploma is a certificate that a student receives when they complete a course of study. Professor Willis gave him his diploma. draft n. A draft is an early version of a piece of writing. The professor started to work on the first draft of his new book. educate v. To educate is to teach people and improve their knowledge. Mr. Smith is trying to educate his class about politics. educational adj. Educational means providing education or relating to education. This educational toy teaches children to read and write. fail v. To fail is to not succeed at a given task or test. John said he knew he was going to fail the examination. graduation n. Graduation is the process of finishing school, college, or university, often involving a ceremony. Joe's mom and dad came to his graduation. institution n. An institution is a large and important organization. This academic institution is 300 years old. lecturer n. A lecturer is a teacher at a college or university. Professor Khan is the most popular lecturer at the university.

literacy n. Literacy is the ability to read and write. The examination tested the children's literacy. midterm n. A midterm is a test taken halfway through a semester. Suzy is studying incredibly hard for the midterm. minor adj. Minor describes something that is small or less important than other things. Studying poetry is only a minor part of Jane's English degree. philosophy n. Philosophy is the study of knowledge, reality, and existence. Plato and Socrates are two important figures in philosophy. progressive adj. Progressive describes something new and ahead of others. He went to a progressive private school, where the pupils could choose which classes to attend. reference n. A reference is a piece of text which mentions another writer, book, or idea. In the book, Amy found a reference to Plato. term n. A term is a word or expression used within a particular subject or area. The term used for a first-year student in high school or college is "freshman." tutor n. A tutor is a teacher who works with small groups or individuals. Betty's tutor is helping her understand philosophy. tutorial n. A tutorial is a period of teaching and discussion with a tutor. Nick is having a tutorial with Professor Schmidt. union n. A union is a group of people who share a common goal. The students' union met to organize a charity event.

AStudent's Blog A Student's Blog by Jenny Choi September 1st at 11:15 p.m. Today was the start of my first semester here at Camford University. It's such a famous old institution, and I have to say that makes me slightly nervous but also proud. In the morning, I went to an introductory lecture by Professor Anderson, who will be my philosophy lecturer this year. He took us through the whole curriculum for the year. It includes so many challenging topics. I can't wait to begin this amazing journey. September 3rd at 9:19 p.m. This morning, I met my personal tutor, Dr. Kim. She explained that we will meet once a week for a tutorial. She is incredibly intelligentand many ofherideas are really progressive. Later, I went and signed up for Art History. It's a minor department within the university, but it has a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff. I also joined the student union and went to a meeting, which was very well attended. October 20th at 8:15 p.m. Sorry, I haven't posted for a while! I've been really busy lately, intensely studying for my first midterm. Dr. Kim says that if we don't put in the effort, we might very easily fail. I'm also working on the first draft of an essay-academic life can be exhausting! October 28th at 6:10 p.m. Well, I passed my first examination! Graduation is still three years away, but it feels like I'm one step closer to getting my hands on that diploma. I went out with my friends to celebrate!
