UNIT 11 CRIME& PUNISHMENT accuse v. To accuse someone is to say that the person did something bad. The group accuses Mark of stealing the cake. armed adj. Armed means carrying a weapon. The robbers are armed with guns. arrest v.To arrest someone is to capture them for a crime they might have committed. The police arrest a man for the crime. bullet n. A bullet is a small piece of metal that is fired from a gun. The gun was loaded with five bullets. commit v. To commit is to do something bad. Some people commit crimes using computers. cruel adj.Cruel means being mean or nasty to others. The group of kids were extremely cruel to Lisa. deliberate adj. Deliberate means intended or planned; it is not an accident. The police said the damage to Bob's car was deliberate. fear n. Fear is the emotion we feel when we are scared. Dan felt a strong sense of fear when he saw the man had a gun. frighten v. To frighten is to make someone feel scared. The messages were starting to frighten Sarah. hold v. To hold is to stop someone or something from moving. The police hold the woman to stop her from running away.

innocent adj, Innocent means having done nothing wrong. Mike says he is completely innocent. penalty n. A penalty is the punishment you get for a certain crime. The penalty for parking in an illegal place is a $200 fine. potential adj. Potential describes something that could happen. Because of heavy snow, the police were worried about a potential accident. pretend v. To pretend is to act like you are something or someone you are not. Katy likes to pretend she is a police officer. risk n. A risk is the possibility that something dangerous may happen. The police were well aware of the risks involved. shock n. Shock is a strong emotion people feel when surprised by something bad. The car accident caused a terrible shock for the driver. suspect v. To suspect is to think someone might have done something bad. She began to suspect him of lying. suspicion n. Suspicion is the feeling you have when you don't trust someone or something. Her suspicion was that the letter was a trick. trial n. A trial is the process that decides whether someone is guilty or innocent. At the end of the trial, John was found to be innocent. witness n. A witness is a person who sees a crime take place. A witness told the police that the robber was a tall man with black hair.
