UNIT 10 CRIME& PUNISHMENT clue n. A clue is an object or piece of information that helps to solve problems. The police thought the footprints on the floor might have been a clue. crime n. A crime is an act that breaks rules or laws. The robber committed a terrible crime. criminal n. A criminal is a person who has committed a crime. The criminal was photographed by the police. danger n. Danger is something that puts a person at risk. Policemen face many dangers at work. death n. Death is what happens when living things reach the end of their lives. After death, a body is often covered up with a sheet. evidence n. Evidence is anything used to prove that something is true. They sealed the evidence in a plastic bag. guilty adj. Guilty means being responsible for a crime. The judge said the man was guilty of stealing. illegal adj, Illegal means something is against the law and you might be punished for doing it. It is illegal to steal someone's phone. jail n. A jail is a place where criminals are kept. The jail is dark and scary. justice n. Justice is the process of making things fair after a crime. They felt that justice had been done.

law n. A law is a rule which everyone must follow. Jane broke the law by driving too fast. legal adj. Legal means you are allowed to do it by law. My dad is a lawyer so people always ask for legal advice. police n. The police are a group of people whose job is to stop others from breaking rules and laws. The police wear uniforms and often carry guns. prison n. Prison is a building where criminals are locked away. The prison has high walls and bars on the windows. prisoner n. A prisoner is a person who is locked away in a prison or jail. The prisoner was locked away for ten years. punish v.To punish someone is to make them suffer in some way because they have done something wrong. To punish the man, the judge made him pay $500. punishment n. Punishment is the act of punishing someone. His punishment for stealing was one year in prison. rule n. A rule is a fixed way of behaving that people are told to follow. The rule says that people cannot cross this line. thief n. A thief is a person who takes things without asking or paying. The thief stole a necklace from the shop. trick n. A trick is a lie used to mislead or fool a person. The criminal planned to trick the lady into giving him her money.

The Legal Process Rules and Laws Rules and laws are there to stop people from behaving badly. By putting them in place, the government of a country decides what is legal and what is not. Did you know that in some apartment buildings in Switzerland, it's illegal to flush the toilet after 10 p.m.? Crime When someone breaks the law, they are said to have committed a crime. Some crimes are much more serious than others and can put others in danger. Other crimes can even lead to death. Police It is the job of the police to catch criminals and bring them to justice. They do this by looking for clues. If they find a really good clue, they use it as evidence in court. Fingerprints are often used as evidence because each person's fingerprints are unique. Detectives might also look for hair or blood that a criminal has left behind. They carefully collect these and bring them to a courtroom. Prison If a person is found guilty of a crime, they will face punishment. They may even be sent to jail or prison. These are not fun places to be. A prisoner is often locked in a small room called a cell for most of the day.
