UNIT 08 MILITARY agreement n. An agreement is a situation in which people have the same opinions. The soldiers came to an agreement about how to handle the situation. army n. An army is a large group of soldiers who fight on the ground. These soldiers are members of the South Korean army. aviation n. Aviation is the practice or business of flying airplanes or helicopters. My brother joined the Air Force because he loves anything to do with aviation. battle n. A battle is a military fight between groups of soldiers. As the tanks approached the battle, they fired their weapons. capital n. A capital is the city where a country or region has its government. The tanks rolled down the streets in a parade through the capital. charity n. A charity is an organization that helps people. Everyone brought something they no longer wanted and donated it to charity. crisis n. A crisis is a situation that needs immediate attention. The military was called in when the crisis escalated. gain v. To gain is to get something you value or want. The protesters wanted to gain equal rights for everyone. government n. The government is the group of people who make decisions for a state or a country. The government controls who can enter the country. independent adj. Independent means not controlled by others. These Panamanians are celebrating the day they became independent from Spain.

leader n. A leader is someone who guides or leads other people. The leader of New Zealand responded immediately to the crisis. marine n. A marine is a soldier who serves both on shipboard and on land. This marine has to carry a tremendous amount of gear. nation n. A nation is a large area of land that is led by its own government. These soldiers belong to the nation of Canada. national adj. National means relating to a whole country or nation. Veterans Day is a national holiday in the US. official adj. Official means being approved by the authorities. This official postage stamp shows soldiers from the old Spanish army. president n. A president is the elected head of some governments. George Washington was the first president of the US. public adj, Public means affecting all the people in a community. The country's leader made a public announcement about the budget for defense. revolution n. A revolution is an attempt to end the rule of a government in power. The town had to be rebuilt after the end of the revolution. social adj. Social describes anything relating to society. When people are social, they enjoy doing activities with other people. society n. A society is a group of people who live together in organized communities. People in the military are respected by our society.

The First World War In 1914, the nations of Europe were in crisis. It all began because many people in Serbia wanted their country to be independent. Other governments couldn't reach an agreement about this. So, Europe headed for war. In France and Belgium, huge battles were fought between the armies of Great Britain and Germany. They spent years trying to gain just a few miles of land. Meanwhile, in the east, Russia was also fighting against Germany. The war was fought in many different ways. For the first time ever, aviation was used. The German Air Force had many skillful pilots. At sea, the British Navy was very strong. Overall, the two sides were equally strong. It seemed like the war would last forever. However, things were changing in Russia. Many people were angry at the royal family and wanted to change society. So, in 1917 there was a revolution. The new leaders of Russia thought that the war was a bad idea and said they would stop fighting. Now it looked as though Germany might win. However, in the US capital,Washington，DC,President Woodrow Wilson was about to make a big decision. The American public hadn't wanted their country to fight in the war. But now, Germany had started sinking US ships. So, in April 1917, Wilson said the US would also fight Germany. This made a big difference. By 1918, the war was over and Germany was defeated. However, so many people had died that no country really won.
