UNIT 06 WORK barber n. A barber is a person who cuts men's hair and beards. The barber trimmed my beard very carefully. boss n. A boss is a person in charge who tells employees what to do. We listened as our boss outlined his new plan of operation. capable adj. Capable means you have the ability to do something successfully, She is a hard worker and very capable in her job. chart n. A chart is information presented in a form such as a table or diagram. Ben's chart clearly showed how the sale of the stocks increased and decreased. contract n. A contract is a legal agreement between two people or companies. Once we signed the contract, the business was ours. debate n. A debate is a discussion between people who have different views on something. The debate focused on who should pay for the changes. employ v. To employ someone is to give someone a job. Mr. Monroe decided to employ me as the company's tech specialist. expert n. An expert is a person who knows a lot about a subject or topic. We listened as the expert gave his opinion about how to increase our business. guide n. A guide is a person who shows visitors interesting places. I'm very happy with my job as a tour guide. profession n. A profession is a job that requires special training or skills. I'd like to decide on a profession before I take more classes.

profit n. The profit is the money a business makes after all expenses have been paid. I'm going to spend the profit I made when I sold my business. promote v. To promote something is to make people more aware of its existence. The company sent out an ad to promote its new discounts. report n. A report is a spoken or written description of an event or situation. All of the information I gathered went into my report. responsibility n. Responsibility is a task, job, or duty that you are required to do. It was our group's responsibility to clean up the company grounds. schedule n. A schedule is a plan of how and when things will be done. I added one more task to my very busy schedule. servant n. A servant is someone whose jobis to cook or clean in someone else's home. She has servants who do all of her household chores for her. signature n. A signature is a person's name written by that same person. I put my signature at the end of the document. spare adj. Spare means something that is extra and not currently used. I don't have any spare time because of work. strike v. To strike is to stop work in order to get your demands met. The workers decided to strike in order to get better pay. survey n. A survey is a questionnaire in which many people are asked about their opinions. They collected the survey data and then began to analyze it.

Yoni Needs Help You seem a little overwhelmed about the responsibility you've taken on. I chose this profession because I thought it would be financially rewarding. However, when I purchased this shop, it was so different. How is it different from what you'd anticipated? I thought I'd only need to employ two other barbers, and after I paid their salaries, the rest would be my profit-but it's more complicated. I not only have my own customers to take care of, but the bank is requiring me to promote the business as a condition of the loan. In addition, there's a lot of paperwork. So, I have no spare time! I imagine there's a variety of reports and charts required every month by the bank. Exactly, and there are bi-monthly tax documents to submit to the government and schedules that the employees never seem to stick to. Have you considered hiring an assistant? I did, but finding someone capable is difficult, and I'd have to pay them as well. Maybe you should consider finding a mentor. I believe there are small-business experts out there who might be able to help you. That's a fantastic idea! I wonder if that involves some sort of contract. I imagine that's something you'll have to find out!
