UNIT 04 TRAVEL abroad adv. To go abroad is to go to a foreign country. Cassie traveled abroad to learn about a new culture. ahead adv. To be ahead is to be in front of or closer to the front. There were lots of people ahead of me in the security line. aircraft n. An aircraft is a machine such as a plane or helicopter that flies through the air. This aircraft needs servicing before it can fly again. baggage n. All the personal items that you take on a trip is called your baggage. We had to wait for our baggage before we could go home. campsite n. A campsite is a place where'you put up your tent when you go camping. Our campsite was very simple and very peaceful. cruise v. To cruise is to travel on a big ship, usually for a vacation. I would like to cruise across the ocean and just relax. destination n. A destination is the place someone or something is going. This was the only bus I could take to get to my destination. fuel n. Fuel Is a material that can be burned for energy. I had to put fuel in the car before we could continue our trip. jet n. A jet is a fast airplane with one or two engines. My CEO flew us to Tokyo on his private jet. lane n. A lane is a part of a road that is separated by painted lines. This highway has three lanes going each way.

launch v.To launch something is to shoot it into the air or into space. The rocket was launched into the sky. motor n. A motor is a machine that makes power or motion. The mechanic had to fix the motor because my car wouldn't start. rush v.To rush is to do something in a hurry. We had to rush to the gate so we wouldn't miss our flight. signal n.A signal is an act that gives information or tells someone about something. The man gave the pilot a signal as she approached the gate. southern adj. Southern means in or from the south of a region, state, or country. South Africa is at the southern end of the continent. steer v.To steer something is to control the direction it goes in. The car was hard to steer in the high winds. tunnel n. A tunnel is an underground passage through which cars, trains, and people can pass. The longest tunnel in the world is under the Swiss Alps. vehicle n. A vehicle is a machine that carries people or cargo from one place to another. A car is only one kind of vehicle on the road. via prep. Via means traveling through a place on the way to a destination. We could only get to New Zealand via Australia. western adj. Western means in or from the west of a region, state, or country. The western part of Africa is shown in blue on this map.

Behind the Scenes Do you know what happens before the jet you're about to board takes you to your destination? There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes to get your aircraft ready to leave. And it doesn't matter if you're flying to a domestic destination or abroad. Most likely, the plane you will board has come from somewhere else. Once it touches down, the pilot steers the plane down the runway lane to the gate. Once at the gate, the pilot turns off the motor, and the work begins. All kinds of vehicles and workers help get you in the air as quickly as possible. The ramp team begins to unload the baggage. They put it all on a giant cart and rush it to the baggage room. From there, it goes on the conveyor belt and comes out to the passengers who just flew on the plane. The catering trucks move ahead and load the cabin with new food carts. The inside of the plane is quickly cleaned. The toilet tanks are emptied. Then the passengers begin to board. While that is going on, another team fills the large fuel tanks via giant hoses. Someone on the ground gives the pilot a signal that everything is ready. It all happens very quickly. Finally, the crew locks the cabin doors. You're on your way!
