UNIT 16 ANIMALS beak n. A beak is the hard, pointed mouth of a bird. A toucan is a tropical bird with a large beak. breed v. To breed is to mate in order to have babies. Many bird species, like the blackbird, breed in the spring. cattle n. Cattle are large mammals raised on farms for their milk or meat. The cattle are grazing in the field. claw n. A claw is a sharp, curved part on the toe of an animal or bird. Bears have very sharp claws. crab n. A crab is a sea animal that has a hard shell, eight legs, and two large claws. The crab is walking along the beach. creature n. A creature is anything that is living, such as an animal, fish, or insect. There are many wild creatures, such as gorillas, in the jungle. extinct adj. Extinct means that a type of animal or plant does not exist anymore. Dinosaurs have been extinct for about 65 million years. feather n. A feather is one of the light, soft parts that cover a bird's body. The peacock has very long, bright blue and green feathers. hatch v. To hatch is to be born by coming out of an egg. The chick hatched out of its egg this morning. jellyfish n. A jellyfish is a sea animal that has a round, transparent body and can sting you. Most kinds of jellyfish live in the ocean.

leopard n. A leopard is a large animal with yellow fur and black spots. Leopards live in Asia and Africa. paw n. A paw is an animal's foot that has nails or claws. The cat is licking its paw. reindeer n. A reindeer is a large deer with long, wide antlers. Reindeer live in cold northern regions of the world. roar v. To roar is to make a deep, very loud noise. The lion's roar was very loud. tail n. A tail is a part at the back of an animal's body that can move. Our dog wags his tail when he's happy. turtle n. A turtle is a reptile with a soft body covered by a hard shell. Turtles live in water or on land. wildlife n. Wildlife refers to animals and insects that live in a natural environment. There's a lot of wildlife in Africa, such as elephants, lions, and leopards. wolf n. A wolf is a wild animal that is similar to a dog and that often hunts in groups. A wolf often hunts for food with other wolves. worm n. A worm is a long thin creature with no bones and no legs. Worms live in soil and are often found in gardens. zookeeper n. A zookeeper is a person who takes care of the animals in a zoo. The zookeeper is feeding the penguins at the zoo.

The Reports Hey, guys, have you started the report on extinct animals? I just started my research today. It was hard for me to choose which extinct animal to research. What most people don't know is that there's a lot of interesting creatures that are now extinct. That's true! We see wildlife today and don't think much about animals that once lived on earth. I did my research on the dodo. This bird-like animal didn't fly even though it had wings. We know that it had a large beak. It also had gray feathers on its body and tail. Like some modern-day birds, it would breed in the summer. The chicks of a dodo grew quickly after hatching. Oh, that's interesting! I'm doing my research on the woolly mammoth. This animal is believed to be closely related to modern-day elephants. It was over four meters tall. It could also weigh over six tons! It was covered in fur and had huge curved tusks. That is so cool! Mine is on the sabre-toothed cat. It looked similar to a leopard, but it had long sharp teeth. They also had big paws with sharp claws. While modern-day big cats hunt animals such as cattle, zebras, giraffes,reindeer, and wolves, this cat hunted sloths and mammoths. Wow, it sounds like you guys are off to a great start!
