UNIT 13 EMOTIONS caring adj. Caring means thinking about what other people need or want and trying to help them. She has a very kind and caring grandmother. courage n. Courage is the ability to do something that you know is difficult or dangerous. She showed a lot of courage throughout her illness. desire n. Desire is a strong hope or wish. He has always had a desire to travel around the world. doubt n. Doubt is a feeling of being uncertain or unsure about something. There is no doubt that smoking is bad for your health. emotion n. Emotion is a strong feeling such as joy, hatred, or fear. They felt many emotions when the baby was born. envy n. Envy is the feeling of wanting to have what someone else has. They looked at the fashionable girl with envy. faith n. Faith is a strong belief or trust in someone or something. The teacher has faith that her students will pass their exams. force v. To force is to make someone do something that he or she does not want to do. Some people have to force themselves to exercise. frank adj. Frank means honest and truthful. The author is writing a frank story about his childhood. freedom n. Freedom is the right to do or say what you want. In most countries, people have the freedom to vote.

honor n. Honor is a type of respect or promise. It was an honor to be invited to the ceremony. mental adj. Mental means connected with or happening in the mind. They have a mental image of what they want their new home to look like. misery n. Misery is extreme suffering or unhappiness. His misery is caused by being very poor. offense n. An offense is something that causes a person to be hurt, angry, or upset. Their bad language was an offense to the girl. reputation n. Reputation is the common opinion that people have about someone or something. The teacher has a reputation for being kind and fair. shocked adj. Shocked means feeling surprised and upset by something. They were shocked to hear the surprising news. stress n. Stress is pressure or worry caused by the problems in somebody's life. Most students feel stress during exams. stressful adj. Stressful means causing worry or anxiety. He had a very stressful day at work. strict adj. Strict means demanding that people follow rules or behave in a certain way. Some children grow up with very strict parents. truly adv. Truly means in an honest manner. His paintings are truly original.

coping with High Expectations Dear Diary, Aargh! I find high school very stressful. I was also shocked to hear that my classmate is suffering from depression. I hope she gets the mental help that she needs. Anyway, all I feel lately is stress. It feels like there's a lot of pressure on us. Most of my teachers are very strict. They have high expectations. Sometimes, I doubt I can ever finish all the assignments that are due. As a result, my emotions are affected. I want to do well in my classes, but I feel overwhelmed with all that I have to accomplish. To be frank, I fear that I might fail if I don't force myself to do it all. This causes even more stress. OMG!! I envy those who can handle high expectations. It's my one desire to cope with pressure as easily as they do. The good news is that one of my teachers has a reputation for understanding student issues, so I got her advice. Her tips gave me the courage to not give up when things get hard. Tips to remember: 1. Work toward long-term goals, but plan for short-term ones. 2. Have faith you will excel, even if you have “failed" before. 3. Celebrate even the small successes. 4. Be satisfied with your personal best. 5. Focus on moving forward, not on what has happened in the past.
