UNIT 12 EMOTIONS confuse v. To confuse is to cause somebody to be unable to think clearly or understand something. She is confused by the complicated map. content adj. Content means pleased and satisfied. She feels the most content when she's reading a book. delight n. Delight is a strong feeling of happiness. She felt delight when she played with the puppies. eager adj. Eager means very excited and interested about something. The eager fans waited for the game to start. generous adj. Generous means willing to give or share. The generous man often shares his wealth with the homeless. grateful adj. Grateful means feeling or showing thanks. The older woman was very grateful for receiving help with her groceries. hero n. A hero is a person who is brave and often looked up to by others. Firefighters are heroes for risking their lives to save others. imagination n. Imagination is the ability to form pictures or ideas in your mind. The boy is using his imagination to pretend that he can fly to the moon. judge v. To judge is to form an opinion about something or someone. You should never judge people by how they look. mood n. A mood is the way you feel af a particular time. Listening to music always puts her in a good mood.

patient adj. Patient means being able to remain calm and not become easily annoyed. The teacher is known for being patient with his students. pleasure n. Pleasure is a feeling of happiness, delight, or joy. She gets a lot of pleasure from painting. proud adj. Proud means pleased and satisfied about someone or something that you own or have done. He is proud of himself for graduating from a top university. regret v. To regret is to feel sad or sorry about something that you did or did not do. If you don't travel now, you might regret it one day. reliable adj. Reliable means being able to be trusted to do or provide what is needed. The family only hires reliable babysitters. selfish adj. Selfish means caring only about yourself and not about other people. The girl is getting in trouble for her selfish behavior. shocking adj. Shocking means very surprising, upsetting, and difficult to believe. The couple just received shocking news about their friend. steady adj. Steady means not nervous or excited. Her voice was calm and steady during her speech. suffer v. To suffer is to experience physical or mental pain. The athletes were suffering after the four-hour practice session. violent adj. Violent means very forceful or intense. She felt sad when her parents got into a violent argument.

Mental Disorders In the 1950s, doctors created the DSM. The DSM is a manual of mental disorders. The manual lists 374 different disorders. It also includes recommendations on how to judge if a patient is suffering from a mental disorder. Let's look at two such disorders. Borderline Personality Disorder(BPD) This is a mental illness where a person's mood and behavior can dramatically change. People with BPDhave problems controlling their emotions. People with BPD can appear generous, grateful, and reliable one moment and selfish, angry, and violent the next. This type of behavior often confuses people. It makes it difficult for patients to keep steady relationships or jobs. Narcissistic Personality Disorder Narcissists have an exaggerated sense of themselves. They are extremely proud. Their imaginations make them believe they're heroes. They experience great delight in being in the spotlight and are eager to promote themselves. It's not shocking to hear that people don't take great pleasure in being with a narcissist. Narcissists sometimes regret their bad behavior. This can cause mood swings and can lead to depression. The DSM has been criticized for its content. Many believe the definitions of disorders are too broad. Another criticism is that behaviors can often be misinterpreted. What do you think?
