A faucet is a device that is used to control the flow of water from a pipe. Turn off the faucet when you are done using it. fountain n. A fountain is a device that sends a stream of water into the air. The fountain is in the middle of the park. frame n. A frame is the part that supports and forms the basic shape of something. The frame of the house is finished. heat n. Heat is the system that is used to provide warmth to a room. The heat is broken, so the house is very cold. heater n. A heater is a machine for making air or water hotter. She is keeping warm by the heater. hut n. A hut is a small and simple house or shelter. There are many colorful huts on the beach.

lab n. A lab is a special room or building where scientists do tests. He is doing experiments in the lab. ladder n. A ladder is a piece of equipment that is used for climbing to reach high places. She is climbing up the ladder. palace n. A palace is the official home of a king, queen, or president. The Queen of England lives in Buckingham Palace. property n. Property is something that is owned by a person or business. The new rule states that we cannot smoke on school property. rug n. A rug is a piece of thick material used to cover part of a floor. There is a large rug on the floor of the room. ruin v. To ruin means to destroy something completely. The house was ruined in the fire. shelter n. A shelter is a structure that covers or protects people or things. There are many bus shelters located around the city. string n. A string is a long thin piece of twisted thread. That string is long. structure n. A structure is a thing made up of a number of parts joined together in a certain way. The bridge is a huge structure made of steel. yard n. A yard is an open area next to a house or other building. There are many trees and flowers in the yard.

Diverse Houses People are always deciding what a home is to them. To many people, a home is a structure which makes up a property. To others, a home is a hidden cave, a cottage by a lake, or even a beautiful palace. Many different types of houses are located all over the world. Round Homes In South Africa, round huts are built from natural materials. They are often made from stone and mud. The roof is tree leaves that are tied to poles with grass string. Stilt Houses In Cambodia, there are houses on stilts. These homes are raised up on pieces of wood to protect them from being ruined during heavy rains. The roofs are on an angle to allow rainwater to stream down without damaging the frame of the house. People who live in stilt houses use ladders or stairs to get into their home. Underground Houses In some parts of Australia, special shelters are built beneath the ground. These underground homes act as a relief from the summer heat and dust storms. Igloos In Canada and Alaska, igloos are about the size of a cabin. However, they are made entirely of snow. These icy homes keep people warm by blocking strong winds. Inside, there aren't any heaters, but there's a small fire to keep warm. There are also thick rugs on the floor.
