They are celebrating their fiftieth wedding anniversary. annual adj. When something is annual, it happens once a year. The international company has an annual meeting every February. companion n. A companion is someone with whom you spend a lot of time or go somewhere. The women have been close companions since childhood. divorce n. A divorce is the ending of a marriage by a legal process. The child is sad because his parents are getting a divorce. extraordinary adj. When something is extraordinary, it is very special, unusual, or strange. Jill is telling us about her extraordinary trip. father-in-law n. A father-in-law is the father of your husband or wife. Glen is sharing some good news with his father-in-law. gender n. Gender is the state of being male or female. They are finding out the gender of their baby. grandparent n. A grandparent is a parent of your mother or father. When something is pure, it is not mixed with anything else. My husband gave me a pure gold ring. refuse v. To refuse is to say that you will not accept something. My daughter refuses to eat any vegetables during family dinner. reveal v. To reveal is to make something known. The woman is revealing a secret to her friend. seek v. To seek is to search for or try to find something. Justin is seeking a new job. spouse n. A spouse is a husband or a wife. I went on a trip with my friends and their spouses. twin n. A twin is one of two babies that are born at the same time to the same mother. Erica and Kate are twin sisters. widow n. A widow is a woman whose husband has died and who has not married again. Leah lost her husband and is now a widow.
