UNIT 12 EDUCATION blackboard n. A blackboard is a smooth, dark surface that is used for writing on with chalk in a classroom. A boy is solving math questions on the blackboard. cafeteria n. A cafeteria is a place where people get food at a counter and carry it to a table to eat. The friends are eating lunch together in the cafeteria. chalk n. Chalk is white or colored sticks used for writing and drawing. The kindergarten student is drawing with chalk. check v. To check is to make sure something is correct. The teacher is checking Tom's notebook. classmate n. A classmate is a member of the same class. My classmates are helping me finish my workbook questions. club n. A club is a group of people who meet to participate in an activity. The boys are a part of an after-school soccer club. dictionary n. A dictionary is a book that contains a list of words in alphabetical order with their meanings. Ron is looking up words in a dictionary. homework n. Homework is work that a student is given to do at home. Kelly's father is helping her with her English homework. junior adj. When someone is junior, they are in a younger group. They are enjoying junior science club. line n. A line is a long narrow mark on a surface. She is drawing a line with a ruler.

mistake [ma'sterk] n. A mistake is something that is not correct. Mr. Miller is fixing the student's mistake. PE [pi:'i:] n.PE (Physical Education) is a sports and exercise class taught as a subject at school. We are playing basketball in PE. practice v. To practice is to do something again and again in order to become better at it. The students are practicing a song together. principal n. A principal is the person in charge of a school. The principal is meeting with the new student and her mother. quiz n. A quiz is a short test. They are taking a biology quiz. remember v. To remember is to have or keep an image or idea in your mind. She is trying to remember what she studied today. scissors n. Scissors are a tool used for cutting items such as paper and cloth. The girl is cutting a piece of paper with scissors. study v. To study is to read, memorize facts, attend school, and do work in order to learn about a subject. Alice is studying her notes in the library after class. tape n. A tape is a long narrow piece of sticky material used to stick things together. I'm using tape to pack my box of books. textbook n. A textbook is a book about a particular subject, written for students. John is reading his textbook while eating lunch.

After-school Chat Hey! I didn't see you in PE. Where were you? I was at the dentist's office.I missed math class, too. What's for homework? We have to do pages 46 to 50. My favorite... NOT. By the way, do you remember Sarah? No... Was she our classmate in history class? No, that's Nancy. Sarah was a junior member in French club. Anyway, she got in trouble and got sent to the principal's office. What did she do? Well, she got into a fight in the cafeteria. This girl took her dictionary by mistake, so she got really upset.
