UNIT 10 COMMUNICATION bow [bau] bowed - bowed v. To bow is to bend forward at the neck or waist as a form of greeting. In Asia, it is polite to bow. envelope ['enveloup] n. An envelope is a flat paper container for a letter. I am putting a letter in an envelope. forget [for'get] forgot - forgotten v. To forget is to be unable to think of or remember something. Jake forgot how to say “hello" in German. fully adv. When something is fully done, it is completely done. Rachel wants to become a fully qualified teacher. greet v. To greet is to meet someone with friendly and polite words or actions. They are greeting each other with a hug. handwriting n. Handwriting is the way a person's writing looks. The child is practicing his handwriting. ink n. Ink is a colored liquid that is used for writing and drawing. I enjoy writing with a pen and ink. invite v. To invite is to request that someone attend a scheduled event. The Hanson family invited us for dinner. joke n. A joke is something that someone says to make people laugh. They are laughing at their friend's funny joke. maybe adv. Maybe is used to show something is possible but not certain. There were maybe one hundred people at the conference.

meeting n. A meeting is a gathering of people for a particular purpose. Our team has a meeting every Monday morning. message n. A message is a piece of information that is sent or given to someone. Eric is excited to receive a message from a friend. postcard n. A postcard is a card, often with a photo or picture on one side, that can be sent without an envelope. The woman is buying a postcard to send to a friend. print v. To print is to put words or images on paper using ink and a machine. I am printing the document. sorry adj. When someone is sorry, they feel sorrow or regret. Jane is sorry for spilling coffee on a customer. stamp n. A stamp is a small piece of paper with glue on it that is used to mail a letter. She is sticking the stamp onto the envelope. sure adj. When someone is sure, they have no doubt about something. Make sure you put a period at the end of each sentence you write. talk v. To talk is to say words in order to express your thoughts, feelings, and opinions. The teacher is talking to the little boy. tell v. To tell is to say something to someone. Betty is telling a secret to her daughter. welcome v. To welcome is to greet in a warm and friendly way. My friend is welcoming me into her home.

From Italy Hi, Susan. Can you guess where I am? Look at the photo and the stamp. That's right! I'm writing this postcard to you from Italy. I'm sorry about my messy handwriting. I'm trying my best to write neatly. I'm in a beautiful town called Positano. I'm learning Italian here. I study in a language class for four hours each day. They have special classes for history, music, and art, too. Sometimes, we go hiking together.

The people here are so friendly and welcoming. They always help me, and I never feel lonely. Last night, I was invited to an Italian home for dinner. I was so nervous that I forgot how to greet someone in I+alian. I couldn't fully anderstand everything. But they were very nice and welcomed me warmly. We talked about my classes and my friends and family. I told them about you. I talked about how you love to tell funny jokes. You should come visit me. I'm sure you will love it here.
