UNIT 16 NATURE below prep. Below means in a lower place or position than something else. Some parts of a plant are below the ground. cave n. A cave is a large natural hole in a mountain or under the ground. The cave is very dark. cloud n. A cloud is a white or gray mass in the sky made of very small drops of water. That cloud looks like a little dog. countryside n. The countryside is land that is not in towns or cities and has farms and fields. He likes biking through the countryside. dirt n. Dirt is anything that makes things not clean, such as earth or soil. They're playing in the dirt. fog n. Fog is a thick cloud just above the ground or sea, which is hard to see through. There's fog over the countryside. gas n. Gas is a substance such as air, which is neither solid nor liquid. Gas is coming out of a hole in the earth. hike v. To hike is to take a long walk, usually in the countryside, She's hiking in the mountains. jungle n. A jungle is a thick forest in a hot country, with many large plants growing close together. Some tigers live in the jungle. lightning n. Lightning is a sudden flash of light in the sky, caused by electricity, during a storm. Lightning hits the tree.

Hot water from the ground makes steam. sunset n. A sunset is a time in the evening when you last see the sun in the sky. They are going for a walk at sunset. sunshine n. Sunshine is the light and heat from the sun. I love summer sunshine. temperature n. Temperature is how hot or cold a place or thing is. The temperature is low today. thunder n. Thunder is the loud noise that you hear during a storm, usually after lightning. There was a big storm with thunder and lighting. wind n. Wind is moving air, especially when it moves strongly or quickly. There's a strong wind today.

The Survivor What happened? I was hiking with my dog in the countryside. At first, there was sunshine, and the temperature felt like spring. My dog was having fun digging in the dirt. But then a strong wind started blowing. Dark clouds came in, and we heard thunder. My dog is usually not afraid of rain, snow, or fog. But he seemed to be really afraid of the thunder. So, we decided to wait below a tree.

But the weather got worse. Later, after sunset, everything looked settled. So I stood up, but suddenly a fire sparked... and... after that I can't remember anything. I just woke up in the same place. Gosh! Thank goodness you are here. I think lightning hit the tree and ME! Wow, I almost died... but now magically I can speak Chinese. Hao*!
