UNIT 01 NATURE bay n. A bay is a large area of water that is part of an ocean or lake and partially surrounded by land. A cliff is a high area of rock with a very steep side, often at the edge of the sea or ocean. I can see for miles when I stand on this cliff. climate n. The climate is the weather conditions and patterns in a region. The climate was too cold for me to live in. coast n. A coast is the land along the sea or ocean. The coast is lined with soft white sand. coral n. Coral is the hard red, white, or pink substance formed by small sea creatures. We dove down in the water to look at the pretty coral. district n. A district is a particular section of a city, town, or country. The suburban district has the best scenery in the city. fossil n. A fossil is the remains of an ancient plant or animal. My brother found a small dinosaur fossil. galaxy n. A galaxy is a single, large group of stars that is part of the universe. I sometimes wonder if there is life in another galaxy. pollution n. Pollution is anything that makes the air or water dirty. There was so much pollution from the factory that it was difficult to breathe.

pond n. A pond is a body of water that is smaller than a lake and surrounded by land. The pond is in the park. recycle v. To recycle is to use something old to make something new. Our family recycles plastic, glass, and newspapers. region n. A region is a large or particular area of a country or of the world. The southern region of the country is very beautiful. scenery n. The scenery is the view of natural features such as mountains, forests, and valleys. I like to drive into the mountains to enjoy the scenery. shore n.The shore is where the sea or ocean meets the land. You can find many seashells when walking on the shore. soil n. The soil is the top layer of earth in which plants grow. The soil in our garden was very sandy. stream n. A stream is a body of water that flows and is smaller than a river. The stream is full of fish. trash n. Trash is something you throw away because you no longer use or need it. The trash in the street was dirty and unhealthy. universe n. The universe is everything that exists in space. There are billions of stars in the universe. wave n. A wave is a long area of water that rises and moves toward the shore. The giant wave knocked me down and under the water.
