CHAPTER 1 Express Yourself! Do you like arts and crafts? Perhaps you like to make collages or sew. Maybe you like to draw or paint pictures. Do you like to act in plays? Perhaps you like to dance or do tricks. Maybe you like to write stories or poems. There are many ways to express yourself.

Some people like to sing. They like to sing along to their favorite songs. Other people play a musical instrument. They like to play solo or with others in a band. These are all ways to express yourself, or share your thoughts and feelings through music. Some people express themselves in a group.

Can you guess what a water bottle has to do with sharing your feelings? How could you use a paper tube to show emotion?Did you ever think that you could use a cardboard box and coffee cans to express yourself? What do all of these items have in common? Trash, like these recycled materials, can be used to make things.

They can all be used to make musical instruments! You can recycle these and many other things to make different kinds of instruments. You'll read about how to make a guitar, a trombone, drums, and maracas. And you'll be able to make them with materials you have around the house! The next time you take out the trash, look through the recycle bin. Set aside things that may come in handy for making instruments. A bottle with some water can be an instrument.
