Chapter 1 What Is a Flood? Water, water, everywhere! It is a flood! Floods happen when water flows over land that is usually dry.

Different things cause floods.Sometimes a big storm pushes huge ocean waves onto land.

Sometimes a lot of rain makes a river or lake overflow. This is what causes most of the floods in America.

Sometimes a levee breaks. A levee is a wall built along a river to keep it from overflowing. When one gives way, water spills onto land.

Chapter 2 What Happens in a Flood? Floods cause many problems. They wash away trees, plants, and farm crops.
