Look at the calendar. It's the first Monday of September. That means it's Labor Day! The first Labor Day was in 1882.

Did you ever wonder why we have Labor Day? It's a day to honor workers. Long ago, workers weren't treated fairly. Even young children worked. Children used to work in factories like this.

Today, our nation has laws to protect workers. Some laws protect children too. Now children go to school instead of going to work. These workers must wear hard hats for safety. STOP AND CHECK When do we celebrate Labor Day? Why do we celebrate Labor Day?
