When the Fire Happened (l) Jessie and her two young sisters lived with their mother in an apartment building. They moved to the city three months ago. One evening, a fire started on the second floor of the building. The smoke quickly spread through the whole building. The fire alarm rang sharply. All the people ran out of the burning building. There was no time to gather valuables. The mother grabbed only winter jackets for her three children. They ran outside to safety. Soon, the firefighters arrived. They were trying to control the fire so that it wouldn't spread to buildings nearby.

The small fre soon turned into a huge flame. Standing in horror, the children watched their apartment building burn for hours. Finally, it collapsed. All of a sudden, this family and twelve other families in the same building were homeless. Their world was turned upside down.
