How Corn Came to the Indians (based on a traditional Native story) Everyone in the village was hungry. There was no food to eat. Two little village boys set out to search for food. They walked for many hours until they saw a small bird. They were very hungry. " Let's eat this bird and then look for more, " one boy said. Suddenly, an old woman came out of the forest. " I am very hungry. Will you share some of your bird with me?" she asked. The boys were starving, but they respected old people. The old woman made a fire. She ate the whole bird. “ You are good boys, " said the woman. " Do not worry. Come tomorrow to this same spot. I will reward you. ’

The boys returned the next day. The fire was gone. In its place were four small, green plants. There was some-thing yellow on the plants. It tasted very good. The boys brought the plants to their village. Soon, the plants grew tall. And from that time on, the people in the village always had corn to eat.
