A Place to Find Wood The year was 1628. The land was called New Amsterdam because it was owned by a Dutch fur company. They had bought it from the Indians for 60 Dutch guilders, which is about 6, 500 Chinese yuan or 65 US dollars today The land was mainly forest. The Indians named it Manhattan, which means" a place to find wood for making bows and arrows” . Today, that island is still called Manhattan. And it is a good place to find people!

The whole city is called New York City. It has about 20 million people who come from all over the world to live there. And about 50 million people visit the city each year! It is full of different people, ideas, cultures and even food. Manhattan has many famous tourist attractions. It is also home to the United Nations, located in the centre of New York City. Wouldn't it be fun to visit a country and see a little of other countries too?
