How Land Came to Be

How Land Came to Be (based on a Canadian Native story) Long ago, the world had two parts. The first was the sky, where there were trees, plants of all kinds, mountains and beautiful fields of green grass. And people lived here. Below the sky was the water. This is where all the animals lived. One day, a hole opened in the sky, and a girl began to fall towards the water below. The animals saw her falling. Two swans saved her life by catching her on their backs. But the animals didn't know what to do with this girl. They decided to ask the wise turtle for advice. The wise turtle said, " Deep below this water, there is soil. Dive down and bring some to me. Then, put it on my big back. The girl can live there. "

A couple of frogs dove down and brought up some soil. The rest of the animals then planted seeds in the soil. The girl now had a good place to live. Over time, the soil on the huge turtle's back grew bigger and bigger. And that is how, today, we have water and land below the sky.
