Chapter 01 A Surprise Girl Matthew Cuthbert arrived at the train station. But the place was quiet and there was no sign of any train. “ Am I too early?” he said to himself. Then the stationmaster came to him and said, “ The train has just eft, Mr. Cuthbert. And a little girl is waiting for you. “ I came here for a boy, not a girl, Matthew said in surprise. “ I have no idea. Well, this is the girl，" the stationmaster said. Matthew turned and saw the little girl.

The girl was about eleven with a small, freckled face. Her hair was red in long plaits. “ Are you Mr. Cuthbert of Green Gables? I'm very happy to live with you, ” she said excitedly. Matthew, a shy and quiet man didn't know what to say. How could he tell her he didn't want her? What would his sister, Marilla say? “ Uh. . . Well, let's go home anyway" he said. He took the girl to his cart and drove home. “ When I was a baby, my parents died. I've had to work hard, but I've always been poor. But I like to imagine beautiful things. It makes me happy. " The little girl talked and talked. Matthew just smiled at her.

Marilla was waiting for them at the door. Anne came up to Marilla with a smile, but Marilla cried, “ Matthew, who is she? Where's the boy?” “ They sent a girl, not a boy, " he said unhappily. Suddenly the girl began to cry. “ You don't want me because I'm not a boy! Nobody ever wanted me, ” the girl sobbed. “ Oh, don't cry. You can stay here, but just for tonight. What's your name?” asked Marilla. The girl stopped crying and said, “ Myreal name is Anne Shirley. But I like to be called Cordelia. Isn't it a romantic name?” Marilla looked at Anne and sighed.

When Anne went to bed, Marilla said to her brother, “ We need a boy. The boy can help you with your work. We must send her back tomorrow. ” “ Marilla, she is nice, ” said Matthew. “ So do you want to keep her?” asked Marilla sharply. “ Well, we can do some good for her. She has been very unhappy up to now, said Matthew. “ But we don't need a girl! ” said Marilla. “ You're right, but perhaps she needs us. And she can help you with the housework. I can get a boy from the village, " he said. Marilla thought for a while and said“ Okay, she can stay. ” Matthew smiled and said“ We should be kind to her. I think she needs a lot of love. ”

The next morning Anne sat up in bed. A flood of sunshine poured into the room. She slowly looked around the room. “ Where am I now? Oh, Im at Green Gables! This is a beautiful place. I really want to live here, she sadly said to herself. At the breakfast table, Marilla said to Anne, “ Matthew and I have decided to keep you. But you should promise to be a good girl. " Suddenly, Anne started to cry. “ Well, what's the matter?” asked Marilla. “ Thank you very much! I'll try to be nice and kind, ” sobbed Anne.
