Penny? You look sad. ' Today our teacher told us that the Earth is getting dirtier every day. Then on my way home after school, I saw so much rubbish in the street. ' ‘Well?' asked Penny's mother. What can you do about it?' I don't think I can do anythingabout it, ' said Penny. 'Of course there's something youcan do, ' said her mother. 'Let me tellyou a story. ' One day, a man walked along a beach. He saw thousands of dyingfish on the sand. A boy was throwing a fish into the sea. You've just thrown a fish back into the sea. Why did you do that?'asked the man. 'I'm trying to save the fish, ' said the boy. You can't save them all, ' said the man. 'No, ' said the boy. 'But I may be able to save one or two. '
As Penny was listening, she had an idea. The next day, she told herclassmates the story of the boy and the fish. We could all do something small to make a difference, ' she said. 'Let'smake a wishing tree and write down the things we can do. The children first made the branches of a tree. Then they cut out someleaf shapes from recycled paper. Each child wrote a promise on a leaf. Penny's promise said: 'I will recycle everything I can. 'Then they stuck theirleaves on the tree. Soon the tree was beautiful and green. On her way home, Penny saw a girl throwing away a can. 'Excuse me, ' said Penny. You shouldn't just throw that can away. You shouldrecycle it. ' 'I'm sorry, ' said the girl. She put the can in the recycling bin. Thank you, ' said Penny. 'We should all do something to protect the Earth. 'What can you do to protect the Earth?
