Chapter 7 Ricky learns a lesson A Read the first part of the play. Characters Kate Butterfly Beetle Firetly Ricky Scene 1 Kate was a firefly. She lived in the forest with her family and the other insects. The insects are busy today, aren't they? Yes, they are. It's getting cold because winter is coming. Look, the bees and the snails are collecting food for winter and the ants are building a new home for their babies. The bees work quickly. The snails work slowly but they're working bard. We work hard too! Our lights are bright. Every night we light up the paths.

Kate : Can I light up the paths? Firefly: No. You're too young to work. Your body doesn't shine brightly yet. Kate : I want a brighter light. Scene 2 Narrator: Ricky the fly was naughty. Kate : Ricky, let's play! Ricky : Shh! Don't speak so loudly, Kate. Speak softly. Come and look at these. Kate : What are they?Ricky : They're matches. Kate : Hold them carefully. They're dangerous. Ricky : Don't worry. Let's light one. Then you can have a brighter light. Here you are. Narrator: Kate was careless. She dropped the match. Kate : Oh no! What do you think would happen next?

E Finish reading the play. Scene 3 Narrator: A fire started. It was the worst fire ever in the forest. It burnt down all the trees. The insects were afraid of the fire but they tried to help one another. Butterfly: Shout loudly. Warn the others! Beetle : Look out! The fire is coming. Let's get away quickly! Snail : Oh no! I can only move very slowly. Ants : Don't worry, Mr Snail. We can help you. Scene 4 Narrator: After the fire the insects had a meeting. They spoke angrily to Ricky and Kate. Butterfly: Ricky, did you steal the matches? Ricky : Yes, I did. I'm sorry. Butterfly: It's wrong to steal. Who lit the match? Ricky : I did. Ant : It's dangerous to light matches.
