Carlos was happy. He was on his way to the animal shelter to get a pet! A pet is a big responsibility. said his mom. Pets have lots of needs. said his dad. Carlos said, I can learn about the needs pets have. Then I'll know which one I want!

Carlos and his parents went to the animal shelter. First, Carlos looked at the rabbits. Some were napping. Others were busy chewing. Carlos learned that rabbits chew a lot. Some of the things they chew can hurt them. Pet rabbits need to stay in cages so they can stay safe.

Carlos thought about having a rabbit. When it is out of its cage, it could sit on his lap. But what if the rabbit chewed something that could hurt it? That would be bad! Maybe a rabbit was not the right pet to pick.

Next, Carlos dashed over to the dogs. The dogs barked and yapped. They wagged their tails. Carlos thought of the fun he would have teaching tricks to a dog. It could fetch and roll over. Then Carlos learned that dogs need to e walked more than one time each day.

Carlos thought about having a dog in the city. He would need to walk the dog every morning. And then he would need to walk it again every afternoon. Maybe a dog was not the right pet to pick.
