CHAPTER 2 THE FRIDAY SURPRISE On Friday morning, Miss Maxwell called everyone to the carpet. "I want to tell you about our big surprise!" she said. "Is it apple pie?' asked Jake. "No, peach pie!" said Emma. "My papa makes the best peach pie ever," said Neela.

"I still hope it's ice cream," whispered Zeke. Fergus nodded. "Or cheese." But the surprise wasn't any of those things. Instead, Miss Maxwell had circled a date on the calendar. "Next week, we will take a class field trip to Coleman Family Farm," she said. "This is a special trip because you will get to do lots of things. You'll get to help out with the farm animals and pick apples. You'll even get to choose a pumpkin to take home!" "Cool!" said Will. "I want to collect chicken eggs!" "I want to feed the goats!" said Neela. "I want to milk a cow!" said Lucy.

Fergus and Zeke were excited. They wanted to do all those things, too! So on the morning of the field trip, they sneaked into Emmas backpack. They rode the school bus, squished between a math book and a banana, all the way down the bumpy dirt road to the farm. When everyone got off the bus, Fergus and Zeke peeked out. "Welcome to the farm!" said a woman in overalls. "We grow lots of different vegetables here. We also have cows, pigs, goats, chickens, beehives, and an apple orchard. My name is Molly. I'm excited to show you around!"
