CHAPTER 1 FOOD FROM THE FARM FERGUS AND ZEKE loved being the class pets in Miss Maxwell's room. They did everything the children did. When the class had writing workshop, Fergus and Zeke worked on stories of their own.

When the children visited the library, Fergus and Zeke went, too. And when it was time for music, Fergus and Zeke sang along. "Old MacDonald had a farm... E-I-E-I-O!"

One day, Miss Maxwell passed out apples for snack time. "Do you know where these apples came from?" she asked the class. "From you!" said Jake. "From the grocery store?" said Emma.

"Yes," said Miss Maxwell. "But before that, they grew on trees, on a farm. This week, we will learn more about where our food comes from. And on Friday, I'll have a special surprise for you." "I love surprises!" said Fergus. "And I love food!" said Zeke. "This is going to be a great week!"
