Unit 00 Welcome

THINK SECOND EDITION STUDENT'S BOOK 3 By Herbert Puchta, Jeff Stranks & Peter Lewis-Jones

WELCOME Page 4 exercise 1 and 2 Hey, Karl, what are you looking at? My History book. Can't you see I'm busy? I'm just asking. Sorry. No, I'm sorry. I don't feel great today. You don't look very happy. What's the matter? My dad makes me so cross. That doesn't sound so good. Why? He says I'm not allow to be in the band. What?! So he won't allowed you to play in the talent show at the weekend? No. He says no music until after my exams. But that's four weeks from now! I know. He wants me to study and forget about writing songs. He won't even let me practise the guitar. But you need some time to relax. I know. I get so angry when I think about it. It just isn't fair.

Page 6 exercise 2 and 3 Conversation 1 There's so much litter on the streets. It's disgusting. I agree. There's rubbish everywhere you look. Why can't people just throw it in the bin? There are plenty of bins around. I guess they're just lazy, aren't they? Not everyone does it, of course. But it only takes a few people to spoil everything, doesn't it? Yes, unfortunately you're right. Conversation 2 The smog in our city is getting worse and worse. Yes, it's all those fumes from the factory, isn't it? That factory is nothing but trouble. They didn't ask us if we wanted it here, did they? No, they never ask us what we want. Do you think all this pollution's monitored? Well, I hope so. I mean, there are people who check on these things. Even if they do, it doesn't make our lives any better, does it? I think we should do something. So do I, but what? Conversation 3 Did you see all that flooding on the news? Yes. Hundreds of homes were damaged, weren't they? It's such a shame. And the politicians aren't really doing anything to help, are they? It isn't the sort of thing you'd expect to see here, is it? No, it isn't. But then all this rain we ve been having is really unusual. Do you think it's because of climate change? No, I don't really believe in all that. Neither do I. Still, it is strange. Page 6 exercise 8 Marco and I want to do something to help the flood victims. What are you going to do? We're going to do a sponsored walk next Sunday. Are you going to walk a long way? Yes – 20 km! Want to join us? I'd love to, but I can't. I'm busy. That's a shame. But you will sponsor us, won't you? Of course I will. Page 7 exercise 13 Have you got everything ready for the party? No, nothing is ready. We haven't found anywhere to have it, for a start. We've looked everywhere. Have you invited anyone yet? Yes, we've invited 50 people and everyone is coming! So you've got 50 people coming, but nowhere for them to come to? That's right. Well, we've got to do something. How about using my house? What about your parents? They won't mind. They're going somewhere for the weekend. I'll make sure everything is clean and tidy when they get home.

Page 8 exercise 1 You don't look well, Angie. What's up? I'm just tired all the time, Mum. You know, I haven't got any energy. Are you sleeping OK? Not great, no. I often wake up in the night. Well, you know, Angie, you should take more exercise. That would help. Really? Yes. I mean, if you took more exercise, you'd be more tired physically and then you'd sleep better. You're joking, right? I run, I go swimming, I go for long walks. My problem isn't exercise. Yes, you're right, of course. Well, perhaps you'd better see a doctor. I can ring and make an appointment for you if you like. A doctor? I don't think so. I don't feel sick – just tired. I'm sure I'll get better soon. OK, well, we can talk about it later. I'm going out to see a friend of mine who had an operation last week. OK, Mum. Hope your friend's all right. And don't worry about me. I'll be fine.

Page 11 exercise 8 and 9 Conversation 1 I've got a problem here. I want to send Mandy a message. Well, go ahead. What's the problem? Well, I've written one, but I can't send it. I mean, I click 'Send', but it doesn't go. Let me see. Oh, right. There's no network coverage here. Really? Oh wait – I remember now. The network is being repaired out here. So you'll have to wait until we get to the town. OK. It isn't so important anyway. Conversation 2 John Martin. Hi, John. Did you get the email I sent you? No. When? I sent you an email with an attachment. It's a great photo I found today. The photo was taken on a safari trip. Look, my email isn't working properly. Can you upload the photo? Then I can go online and see it. Sure. I'll call you again when it's been uploaded, OK? Great – thanks. Conversation 3 Sarah, you know the email that was sent to me? The one with the form to fill in? That's right. Well, I've downloaded it, but I can't open it. Oh, right. I know what the problem is. You need to install a program that opens the file. OK. How do I do that? I'll send you a link. Just click on it and the program will be installed automatically. Brilliant. Thanks a lot.
