Our first caller is Liliana. OK, Liliana, what's your favourite music? Hello, my mother is Mexican and we often go to Mexico. I love the mariachi music I see there. There's a group of men and sometimes women and they all stand up playing instruments like guitars, trumpets and violins. They also wear traditional Mexican hats. I think they look fantastic. Yes, thanks, Liliana. And now here's Lewis. Hi Lewis, tell us what you like? Hi there. Well in Indonesia there's this traditional musical performance called Gamelan. They have these orchestras with some very unusual instruments. They make beautiful sounds and when they all play, the musicians wear the same traditional clothes. Presenter Thanks, Lewis. And now let's talk to Jen. I love African drumming. I go to a lot of musical festivals and there's always some African drumming. Is there any African country you like the drumming from most? Well, I like all African drumming, but the drummers from Burundi are fantastic. And they wear these really cool green, red and white clothes. They're the colours of the Burundi flag. Page 81 Culture Exercise 2 DANCES AROUND THE WORLD 1 THE TANGO The Tango is the national dance of Argentina, and every year on 11th December people in Buenos Aires celebrate the Day of the Tango. They do the tango in dance halls, parks and squares all over the city. The dance is usually performed by a man and a woman. The man often wears smart trousers and a shirt. The woman often wears a beautiful dress. The dance is often very interesting to watch. 2 THE WHIRLING DERVISH The Whirling Dervish is a dance from Turkey. There is a group of twelve men who dance. They wear traditional costumes with big skirts. They often all wear white, but sometimes the skirts are different colours. There is another group of twelve musicians. They play traditional Turkish instruments. As the music plays, the dancers spin around in circles, getting faster and faster. The dance is very popular with tourists. 3 IRISH DANCING There are lots of Irish dances, but perhaps the most famous one is the 'step dance'. One or more dancers perform the step dance. The dancers only move their legs. They move them very quickly. The top half of the body doesn't move. Dancers usually wear traditional Irish costumes. The music they dance to is played by an Irish folk band. They play instruments like the fiddle and the whistle.
