13 Monstering

CHAPTER THIRTEEN Monstering As the monster staggered towards him, Ted screamed. The black shape jumped into the air and grabbed Ted's branch. It swung above the trap. 'Nooooooo!' cried Ted, shuffling higher up the branch. Willow ran out from behind the spiky bush waving a stick. 'Let go of that branch, you rotten Bigfoot!' she yelled. 'Let it go!' But the monster hung on tight. It shook the branch, which began to bend. 'Willow!' cried Ted. 'The branch is gonna snap! We're both going to fall in!' 'Oh,' said Willow, pausing to scratch her nose. 'I hadn't thought of that.' 'AAAAAARGH!' yelled Ted, as a crack jagged through the branch. He fell backwards… he was heading straight for the trap… But at the last moment, the monster grabbed his paw. 'Huh?' said Ted.

He looked at it for long enough to see a pair of eyes twinkling at him through the darkness. Something GROWLED. And it wasn't the monster. 'Get your hands OFF my brother!' roared Nancy, flying through the air with the power of a champion treebonker. She collided with Ted and the Bigfoot, pushing them away from the trap and onto the ground. Willow grabbed Ted and dragged him away. Nancy was trapped underneath the Bigfoot, which was rolling around and moaning. 'Push him that way!' Willow yelled at Nancy, pointing at the trap. Nancy gritted her teeth and heaved herself up, rolling the Bigfoot onto the branches covering the deep hole. 'AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!' it yelled. The twigs snapped and the monster landed with a THUNK at the bottom of the hole. Nancy, Willow and Ted lay panting on the floor. 'It worked!' gasped Willow between breaths, her eyes shining. 'My trap worked! OW!'

Nancy had picked Willow up by the ears and was shaking her like a maraca. 'What were you thinking, you idiot bunny?' she barked. 'It was my idea too, Nance!' yelped Ted, still lying on the floor. 'L-l-l-let's l-l-l-l-l-ook a-a-a-a-at th-th-th-the m-m-m-m-mmonster f-f-f-f-f-first,' said Willow. Nancy stopped shaking Willow and let her thump to her feet. Slowly, the three of them crept to the edge of the pit.

They saw a dark lump buried beneath the branches and twigs. And then a head popped out. 'Hello!' it said. 'Nice to meet you.' 'The Bigfoot can TALK!' said Willow. 'This is SO COOL.' 'I'm not a Bigfoot!' said the voice, which was scratchy and hoarse. It poked its head up a little bit more. 'I'm a fox!' Nancy and Ted looked at each other. Nancy frowned. Ted's eyes grew big. He scrabbled around for his torch and shone it into the hole. Slowly, very slowly, the monster stood up. In the torchlight, they could clearly see that the creature was bundled in lots of blankets and rags, which made it look huge. It was wearing a big furry hat. On its back was a huge rucksack, which had pots and pans hanging off it. A fishing rod was poking out too, as was a bundle of rope. And sure enough, in the middle of it all, was a fox. A very muddy, very stinky fox. 'Who are you?' barked Nancy, pointing a stick at it, just in case. The fox grinned. 'You must be Nancy,' it said. Nancy growled and her hackles went up. 'How come you know my name?' she grizzled. But the fox kept grinning and looked at Ted.

'And you must be… Ted?' it said. Then it started coughing. It was a dry, tired cough. 'WOAH!' said Ted. He started to hop up and down, forgetting to be scared. 'Yes! Yes, I'm Ted! Hello!' 'What's my name then, PSYCHIC FOX?' shouted Willow. 'I'm afraid I don't know,' said the fox. 'HA! I knew it,' huffed Willow, not knowing exactly what she meant. But it sounded good.
