11 The Whirligig

CHAPTER ELEVEN The Whirligig Nancy was terrible at breaking bad news. 'The duck's gone,' she said. 'She's fallen in love. The whole thing is ridiculous.' 'No! Not Ingrid!' cried Titus, staggering back into his chair. 'I can't believe it! Not only are they stealing our town, they've taken our most famous duck!' 'I'm sure she'll come back,' said Ted. 'She just got overexcited, that's all. She'd never abandon the Grimwood Players! We're her pride and joy.' 'You know nothing of the power of love, young fox!' wailed Titus. 'When Ingrid falls in love, she falls deep, she falls fast, she falls hard. She's been married FOUR TIMES!' 'Oh,' said Ted. 'And what of Grimwood's finest poet, Emo Omar?' wailed Titus. 'Where is he? Where are his little moley pals?' 'The moles got well into the Twinklenuts library,' said Willow. 'We left them by the poetry section. It is pretty cool, to be fair.' 'Everyone really is leaving me,' sobbed Titus.

Meanwhile, Frank was worrying about the Twinklenuts treebonk team. Nancy had told him that they were good– really good. 'And you're sure you saw them chugging down energy drinks?' he said. Nancy nodded. 'I'd know them bottles anywhere. That stuff used to keep us up for days in the Big City. One time my mate Hedge drank three bottles and her fur turned purple.' The Grimwood treebonk team started moaning and flinging themselves dramatically to the ground. 'It's over! We're done for!' cried Ginger Fiasco. 'We are never done for!' scolded Frank. 'Now get up and stand in line. Show me your power poses! I want those Twinklenuts squirrels to be quaking in their leotards.' The squirrels shuffled about a bit, adjusted their helmets and tried to look scary. 'We're done for,' sighed Frank. 'Hang on,' said Willow. 'Can't we just get a load of energy drinks?'

Nancy laughed. 'Those drinks are hardcore,' she said. 'We ain't gonna find them around here. Your mate Sebastian Silver must have forked out a loooooot of cash for all those bottles.' 'We need to surprise them,' muttered Frank. 'Something that catches them off guard. A new move, maybe.' Just then, there was an enormous BANG and an explosion of glitter rained over everyone. 'SORRY!' shouted Pamela from the top of the Magic Tower. She and Sharon the Party Crow were still trying to invent the largest glitter cannon in the world. Volunteers from Bunnyville were signing up to take part in test flights, which meant that every few hours a bunny would fly through the air in a cloud of rainbow sparkles. This time, it was a chain of three bunnies, who were gripping each other's paws and gliding through the air like a furry plane.

'It's a miracle those bunnies survive,' sighed Titus, shaking the glitter from his antlers. Nancy looked at Frank, her eyes shining. 'That's it!' she said. 'That should be our move!' The squirrels looked up at her, confused. 'Aye,' said Frank, also watching the chain of bunnies. 'That could work.' Frank, Nancy and the squirrels spent the afternoon developing their brand new treebonk move. On Frank's command, the squirrels would grab on to each other's tails and form a long, hairy chain. Nancy– their secret weapon– would go at the very end. Then the chain would spin hard and fast, and Nancy's tail would be able to thwack any enemy treebonkers to the ground. 'What a cool move!' said Willow. 'It needs a name!'

Ted's head rolled round and round and round as he tried to keep up with the spinning squirrels. 'What about the "Whirligig"?' he said. 'Just watching it is making me dizzy!' Nancy and the squirrels spun round so fast they became a blur. Frank blew his whistle and the team fell to the ground. 'It's the nuttiest thing I've ever seen,' he chuckled. 'It just might work.' Reminds me of the time I invented a new move at my local bowling club. If it wasn't for that meddling centipede Janet Muldoon I would have won the championship. Dang you, Janet!
