Chapter 4

Chapter FOUR When we finally arrived at the kelp forest where we were going to camp, I swam out of the carriage and stared up at the towers of wavy, translucent leaves reaching up towards the surface of the ocean. The sunlight pierced through, sending rays of beautiful light dancing through the water.

'I wonder if there's a café around here somewhere?' said Auster, joining me. Mum laughed. 'No cafés,' she said. 'But we'll find a hydrothermal vent and make some tea ourselves after we've unpacked.'

'Yeah!' I cried. 'Come on! Let's explore the kelp forest and find somewhere to pitch our tents!' I wiggled my tail and shot off into the forest, enjoying the feeling of the leaves slipping past my skin. They were so tickly! I led us all to a little clearing in the middle of the forest. There was even a natural hydrothermal vent gushing out hot water in the middle of it.

'Perfect!' I cried. I took off my backpack and began to put my little tent up, while Auster went back to the carriage to fetch his suitcases, and the dolphins played hide-and-seek among the kelp towers.

'There!' I said, once I had set up my tent and arranged my sleeping bag and sea-sponge mattress exactly how I liked it. I looked at Delphina, who appeared to be having a bit of difficulty with putting up her own little tent. Her tail was all tangled in the guy ropes, and she seemed to have lost one of her tent poles. 'I've never put up a tent before,' she said. 'I'll help you!' I said, happily. Together, Delphina and I put up her tent and then squiggled inside. 'It's cosy!' said Delphina, hugging her squishy pufferfish toy. I beamed at her. Now we really were properly camping!
