海盗家族 · 2 The Jolley-Rogers and the Cave of Doom

16 Home

16. HOME The clouds had parted, and it was turning into a lovely evening as the Blackhole arrived in Dull-on-Sea. Nugget steered the ship into port, the sails were furled, ropes were tied, and Jim and Matilda skipped down the gangplank. "Thanks for yer help, Tilly!" said Jim Lad, sitting beside Matilda at the bus stop. "Them sea hags had us good and proper,

and we'd still be bewitched by that cursed gold, if ye'd not come to the rescue." Matilda held Jim's hand. "No problem," she said. They sat in silence for a few moments, watching the sea, until the bus pulled up. "Write me notes," said Matilda, turning to Jim as she climbed on board. Then she walked to the back of the bus and waved to Jim, for as long as she could see him, out the dusty window. Ten minutes later, Matilda walked in through the patio

door of her house. Her mom and dad were just sitting down to dinner. "Where have you been?" said her dad. "You've been out all day. We were starting to worry. What have you been up to?" "Stuff and things," said Matilda, joining them. "Hanging out with Jim Lad, mostly...." After dinner, Matilda went up to her room and sat at her desk. Something poked her in the tummy, and it was only then that she found Dabberlocks's wand still tucked in her belt. She pulled a note- book from her drawer and grabbed a thick black marker. She wrote "A Guide to the Magical Interweb" on the cover, then opened the book and started writing.

Next morning, Matilda asked her dad for a large envelope, sealed the notebook and wand inside, and wrote: Pipweed, Maerl, and Dabberlocks Hag's Head House Hag's Head Dull-on-Sea (Sorry—I don't know the zip code.) She doodled a skull and crossbones on the other side (she thought Pipweed might like it) and headed down the road to the mailbox.
