best friend. Diana wasn't even allowed to speak to Anne at school. Every night Anne came home and told the Cuthberts all the things she and Diana did not do. And so, Anne and Matthew found themselves alone by the fire one winter's night. She was struggling with her math homework. "Matthew, did you study math in school?" she asked. "Sure," he replied. "Don't know that I remember much, though." "I wish you did. These are very hard. I hate to think that Gilbert will get them all right and I won't." "Well, no," Matthew shifted in his chair. "Mr. Phillips told me last week that you were 'making rapid progress.'" Anne and Matthew's talk was cut short by

a banging on the door. Diana stood there, white-faced and breathless. She had only a shawl thrown over her shoulders. "Diana!" Anne ran to the door. "What's the matter?" "It's Minnie!" Diana cried. "She's so sick. She has the croup! Mary-Jo Spencer is staying with us while Mother and Father are away, but she doesn't know what to do. Oh, Anne, Minnie is just a baby. I'm so scared." Matthew grabbed his coat and hat and left without a word. "He's gone for the doctor," Anne said as she got her coat. "He doesn't have to say a word. I just know." "He'll have to go all the way to Carmody," Diana said. "Dr. Blythe went to town—and I think Dr. Blair did, too." "There's no time to talk." Anne took Diana's hand. "I know what to do. Don't

forget, I looked after three sets of twins. They always got the croup." The two girls ran through the woods to the Barrys'. Minnie, aged two, was truly sick. Mary-Jo paced the floor with the crying baby in her arms. "She's pretty sick," Anne said, "but I've seen worse." Anne set to work right away.

She ordered Mary-Jo to heat some water. Diana put her sister to bed. Anne fixed up the medicine and started the long night of helping Minnie. It was a long night and very hard work. Anne and Diana fed Minnie her medicine and kept her warm. Matthew and the doctor finally arrived at three in the morning. Matthew had to go all the way to Carmody to find him, and the trip was a long one. The doctor examined Minnie. He said that the danger had passed. "You've done a fine job, Miss Shirley," he said. "I was very worried for a while there," Anne admitted. "Although I said nothing to Diana or Mary-Jo." Matthew and Anne walked back to Green Gables in the bright moonlight. Even though she was very tired, she couldn't stop talking.
