Maddy Yips · Maddy Yip's Guide to Life
Wednesday evening– showtime There must have been about seventy people in the dining room, all on the verge of a riot. We couldn't have people throwing crumpets about. It was highly irresponsible. Think of all those starving pigeons begging around the bus station, not to mention the mess it would make on the carpet. Everyone needed to be calmed down. I wondered
whether I could do the bingo calling, but I couldn't remember any bingo lingo apart from 'Droopy drawers, forty-four' and 'Dirty Gertie, number thirty'. (Because they are a bit rude and make me chuckle). I looked at Dev for some answers and there it was, staring me in the face! Dev was here, my magic box was here and so was Hulk. What better time than now to do my MAGIC TRICK? It was the perfect opportunity to rehearse in front of a live crowd (if I ignored the fact that they were furious as hell). I had a burst of showbiz energy and leaped up onto the stage. Mrs Bogton was still standing in the middle in a state of shock, so I eased the microphone out of her trembling hand and ushered her off
gently. Everyone stopped whinging about the lack of bingo and stared up at me.

'Good evening, ladies and gentlemen,' I mumbled, awkwardly. Ged guzzled water and gave me a murderous stare. 'It's such a shame about the bingo,' I said. 'But you'll be happy to know we have something else in its place, EVEN BETTER!' Dev took his place in the wings. He grinned and nodded and gave me a thumbs up. 'So please sit back, relax, and enjoy this evening's entertainment which is er... er...' Tumbleweed blew by in my head and someone shouted from the back, 'Get
off, you're rubbish!' Dev rushed on and announced down the mike, 'Let's give it up for MAGIC MADDYYYYYYY!' Then he shoved the box in my arms. 'Good luck!' he whispered. GULP. I put the box on the table behind me. It already had a tablecloth on, which was just what I needed for the illusion to work. I opened the box and circled the front of the stage to reveal Hulk. 'EEEEEEK, RAT!' a lady screamed.
