Chapter ONE It was a bright and sparkly spring morning, and I opened my eyes to sunshine streaming through the arched window of my turret bedroom. 'Oh, Pink Rabbit,' I exclaimed. 'It's such a perfect day for a picnic by the stream!' I leapt out of bed and flew downstairs
to the kitchen, flapping my bat-like vampire-fairy wings. Mum wasn't there but Dad was standing by the fridge drinking a glass of red juice and looking windswept. He must have just arrived home from his nightly flight. My dad is a vampire and stays up most nights, soaring high among the stars.
'Good evening, Isadora,' he said. 'I mean morning, sorry!' 'Hi, Dad!' I said, hopping up and down excitedly. 'It looks like it's going to be such a nice day! We could go for a picnic and splash in the stream and make flower crowns and eat peaches and...' Dad glanced out of the window at the sunshine and looked a little worried. 'I'd better get forty winks first if we're going on a picnic...' 'Oh, but can't we leave now?' I asked. 'You can snooze under your big black parasol!' 'It's only six in the morning, Isadora!' he laughed. 'And besides, we haven't even
talked to Mum yet. Where is she, anyway? She's usually the first one up...' 'Let's go and ask her!' I cried, grabbing Pink Rabbit's paw and running out of the kitchen. Pink Rabbit used to be my favourite stuffed toy, but my mum magicked him alive for me with her fairy wand! Dad caught up just as I pushed open the door of his and Mum's bedroom and we both peered inside. The curtains were drawn, tissues littered the floor and there was a sniffling sound coming from the bed. Through the gloom, I could just about see Mum lying there, her pink hair splayed across the pillow.
