Chapter ONE It was a very early Saturday morning in autumn. My brother Wilbur and I were having breakfast at the kitchen table when Mum ran into the room with her hair sticking up all over the place and soot smudges all over her face. Dad hurried in after her, his nose buried in a spellbook. My mum and dad own their own beauty
business, concocting organic face creams, perfumes, and lipsticks. They spend a lot of time up in Mum's witch turret working on new lotions and potions. 'I'm sure I have some dried dragongrass flower petals somewhere!' said Mum, flinging open the cupboard under the sink and rummaging inside.
'It says you can substitute dragongrass flower petals for lizardgrass flower petals in potions,' said Dad. 'The end result just won't be as glittery.' 'Oh, but our new eyeshadow must be glittery!' said Mum. 'We absolutely need dragongrass flower petals!' She began to throw things out of the cupboard until the whole kitchen floor was a mess of plastic bottles and cardboard cartons.
'There's none!' she cried, throwing her hands up in the air and looking defeated. Then she noticed me and Wilbur sitting at the table watching her. 'Oh, good morning, my little witchlings!' she smiled. 'I didn't think you'd both be up so early!' 'The bangs woke me up,' said Wilbur. 'It sounded like fireworks!' I agreed. Mum looked guilty. 'Oh dear,' she said. 'Sorry!' Dad came over and sat down at the table. He looked exhausted.
'Mum and I got a bit carried away experimenting with new potions early this morning,' he said. 'There might have been a few little explosions.' 'We're trying to make the perfect berry-purple eyeshadow,' explained Mum.
