Chapter SIX 'What is going on?' snapped Miss Spindlewick with her hands on her hips. 'This does not look like human football to me!' Everyone immediately stopped running around. The balls all fell to the ground and the smoke and sparkles cleared. Silence descended over the pitch.
What must you think of us, Chrissy Gold!' said Miss Spindlewick. 'This is not the impression we wanted to give you. Chrissy Gold just smiled and brushed a strand of hair out of her face. 'It's fine!' she said, grinning. 'I've had a lot of fun. It's been one of the more lively games of er... football I've played for a while. But that's certainly not a bad thing! I've been reminded of my witchy roots today.' She turned and gave both me and Carlotta a wink. I felt my face turn bright red, and I hoped that Miss Spindlewick hadn't noticed.
'Humph!' said Miss Spindlewick. 'I ought to give everyone in the class a detention!' 'Oh, please don't on my account!' said Chrissy Gold. 'All your witches have played very enthusiastically. They're a credit to the school!' 'Well!' huffed Miss Spindlewick. But she sounded slightly less cross. 'Shall we give you the trophies?' said Miss Toadflax quickly. 'I'll let you decide who wins them, Chrissy Gold. Miss Toadflax handed two gleaming silver trophies to Chrissy Gold, and we all huddled round her, flushed and streaked with mud.
'What an eventful game!' said Chrissy Gold. 'To be honest, I'm not sure which team won, so I'm going to have to award the trophy to all of you! Well done!' 'Woohoo!!' we all yelled.
'I'd better look after that!' said Miss Spindlewick, taking the trophy out of Chrissy Gold's hands. 'It can go on top of the potion cupboard in the classroom.'
'And now for the prize for the best player,' said Chrissy Gold, holding onto the other gleaming trophy. 'There was one witch who played consistently well throughout the whole game. One witch who absolutely shone!' I held my breath, suddenly hoping that Chrissy Gold wouldn't say my name after all. There was only one witch who really deserved the trophy. 'Hazel!' said Chrissy Gold, and I let out a sigh of relief. 'Well done! You really have a talent for football. I expect I'll be watching you on the TV one day!' I saw Hazel blush a deep red.
