you sign my poster, pleeease?' She thrust a rolled-up piece of paper towards Chrissy Gold, and Chrissy Gold laughed. Miss Spindlewick didn't seem quite so amused.
'There will be plenty of time for Chrissy Gold to sign things later,' she said sharply. But to my great delight, Chrissy Gold ignored Miss Spindlewick! She took a pen from her pocket and signed Hazel's poster with a flourish.
Hazel beamed. Miss Spindlewick pursed her lips crossly. I decided that I really liked Chrissy Gold! It was just a shame that I was probably going to make such a fool of myself in front of her when she discovered how bad I was at football. 'I believe,' said Miss Spindlewick sniffily, 'that the girls have been learning how to play football this morning. Is that right, Miss Toadflax?' into two teams please!' I immediately looked for Hazel. If I was going to have any chance of being on the winning team and getting noticed at all, then I needed to make sure that I was on her side. But it seemed as though some of the other witches in my class were having the same thought. Lots of my friends were flocking towards Hazel! I hurried to join them. 'Oh dear,' said Miss Toadflax. 'The teams don't look quite even! Mirabelle, hop over to the other team, please. I opened my mouth to protest but then saw the warning look on Miss Spindlewick's face. Reluctantly I shuffled
over to stand next to Carlotta on the other team. 'Marvellous!' said Miss Toadflax. 'Take your positions, witches!' We all looked at each other, confused. 'What positions, Miss Toadflax?' asked Carlotta, and I saw Hazel give an exasperated sigh. 'Oh, um,' said Miss Toadflax, looking flustered.
