Chapter 7

Chapter SEVEN Wilbur and I had a great time in the waterpark. We went on all the rides and played in the pool until sunset. Then we went back to the treehouse and had a campfire with Mum and Dad where we roasted marshmallows and sang songs. It was the best day ever!

The following day I bumped into Beatrix at the swamp spa. Her mum was keeping a beady eye on her and she seemed much more subdued. 'I couldn't believe some of the stories you were telling me, Mirabelle,' she said. 'About how you magicked up a dragon and turned your Dad into a frog! I thought you'd think I was so boring!' 'But that's nothing compared to what you told me!' I said in surprise. 'Your stories are even naughtier!' Beatrix shrugged and she went a bit red.

'I made some of them up,' she whispered. 'I was trying to impress you.' I stared at Beatrix in disbelief. 'You don't need to impress me, Beatrix!' I said. 'And you definitely don't need to impress me by doing any more magic! In fact, I'd prefer it if you didn't!' Beatrix beamed with delight. 'Really?' she said. After that Beatrix and I spent the rest of the holiday together and Beatrix didn't play any more tricks. It was much more fun! Even Wilbur joined in with our games sometimes. By the end of the week I felt really sad to say goodbye. 'I'll miss you, Beatrix!' I said.

'I'll miss you too, Mirabelle,' said Beatrix, shyly handing me a little present. 'I bought this for you at the gift shop. You can open it in the car.' 'Oh, thanks!' I said, feeling touched that she would get me a present. 'Let's be pen pals. We can write letters to each other!' 'OK!' grinned Beatrix happily.

We swapped addresses and then got into our separate cars, waving goodbye to each other. Once we had started driving I opened the little gift that Beatrix had given me. Inside the wrapping was a small wooden box. I flicked open the lid and almost jumped out of my skin. BOIIIING! A green witch's head with a long warty nose pinged up at me on a spring. 'Got you!' it cackled. I squealed and dropped the jack-in-a- box on the floor. Then I burst into giggles. Five days was obviously too long for Beatrix to go without playing a trick!
