CHAPTER 10 After Sandy dispatched a trusted hen harrier called Nigel down to London, the unlikely gang made their way across country to. try and head off Roderick's army. Sandy and Gordon led the way. 'If we are to stand a chance, we have to get to Lowthers Pass before them, said Sandy as they ran. "That's the only way to get to the main trail to Edinburgh. It's a small gorge cut into the bottom of the mountain with sheer walls and a small river running

next to it. It's so narrow you can only get out of it two by two, so it'll be a perfect place for us to stage an ambush.' As they made their way there in haste, Silver noticed that TOTO AND FERDICAT BOTH HAD HUGE SMILES on their faces. 'Enjoying this, you two? On our way to almost certain doom?' 'Well, you can't say it's not exciting,' Toto shouted back. But her brother was right: all her life as a ninja, she'd been warned about the warrior she was now about to stand shoulder to shoulder with. It was an odd feeling and ADF seemed to sense her thoughts. 'Don't worry, little ninja. I feel it too, probably more so! I've been so fixated on defeating you and Larry, my judgement got clouded. But there's nothing like the heat of battle to make you see things clearly. Toto, it's an honour to be fighting alongside you. Toto smiled and nodded back.

'This is TOO weird,' shouted Silver. 'Sshh, we're approaching the pass,' Sandy whispered, calling them all to a halt. They had made good time and, with an expert like Sandy leading the way, they had arrived before Roderick and the army. Toto and ADF directed the rest of the team to take up positions on the hillside and before long they heard the march of a thousand animals coming their way. 'Remember, hissed Toto, 'only reveal yourselves as they are coming out of the gorge on our side. On my call.' 'Gotcha,' said Silver, Socks and Catface in unison. 'Good luck,' whispered ADF. 'Remember: PURRS, PAWS AND CLAWS.' Toto couldn't believe he had uttered the Ninja Cat motto. 'Once a ninja, always a ninja,' he said, giving her a nudge. By now the advancing army were directly

underneath them in a bottleneck, just as Sandy had said they would be. 'READY IN THREE... TWO... ONE... JUMP!' The unlikely seven all landed exactly where they wanted, right in front of Roderick's army at the mouth of the gorge. Roderick froze. 'You! You escaped! No matter. I've waited a long time for this. Ever since we fought on that viaduct, I've dreamt about this moment. And after I've dealt with her, I'm coming for YOU!' He pointed at ADF, then climbed up on to a nearby rock. 'Army: advance and destroy!' Roderick's army slowly moved forward, but Sandy had planned their position perfectly; due to the narrowness of the gorge they could only get out into the open in twos. Which for two fully trained ninjas and five well-intentioned amateurs was a gift from heaven. Every time two animals exited the tunnel they were dealt with swiftly, Toto and ADF displaying
