鹪鹩王国 · 16 The Dream Portal
CHAPTER 6
A Dream Key Lucas and Clara hurried back to the kitchen to find a terrible scene. Cook was sound asleep, curled up inside the cage where Ruskin had been. A light mist encircled him. "Cook! Wake up!" Lucas snapped. But the giant chef did not stir. Instead, his snores shook the room. Clara wasted no time searching for their friend. She tossed pots and pans aside before announcing, "Ruskin's gone!" They quickly ran into the great hall and found a castle-guard. "Have you seen Ruskin?" the prince asked breathlessly.
"Sure, I just saw him on my rounds," the guard said as she pointed toward the West Tower. "He was yawning by the battlement." Lucas and Clara thanked the guard and charged toward the stairs. As soon as they stepped onto the
wall-walk, they spotted Ruskin stretching his wings. "Ruskin!" Lucas cried as he and Clara ran toward the dragon. "We were so worried you might have been—" But before the prince could finish his sentence, Ruskin finished it for him. "Asleep?" the dragon said in a deep, groggy voice. Ruskin was back in a trance. His eyes were open, but they had the fiery glow the kids had seen in their dreams. This was not the Ruskin that Lucas knew. "Who are you?" demanded the prince. "I am the Dream Portal," said the voice coming from Ruskin. "And I have waited years for a scarlet dragon. Your Ruskin is very powerful and very pesky. He was able to break into your dreams and
save you, after all. But in showing me his power, he gave away his secret. Using him, I can unlock the dreams of every living creature in the kingdom. Then, once inside, I will be able to control all of Wrenly!" The Dream Portal let out an evil laugh as it forced Ruskin to fly away.
