Chapter 6 The cattle of the sun We stopped for the night on an island full of golden cattle. Seeing their shining skins, I guessed that they were the cattle of the sun god, Helios, that Tiresias had warned me about. I addressed my men in my sternest voice. "Whatever you do, do NOT eat these cattle. Don't even look at them!" For a while, the men obeyed. But we were running low on food again, and my men began to mutter: "If we starve, we'll be dead anyway. We only have the word of a dead man for it, too." The next day, I smelled roasting meat. My men were eating the cattle! "Fools!" I cried. But it was too late- the damage was done. With a heavy heart, I ushered everyone back onto the ship and we set sail. What else could we do?
Moments later, the sun god Helios smashed our boat into little tiny pieces. I was the only survivor.
I found myself shipwrecked on an island, where I was taken prisoner by a magical woman named Calypso. I spent seven long years there, pining for home, until the great god Zeus sent a messenger to free me. And so here I am...
