The Story of the Olympics

Chapter 1 Sports in ancient Greece The ancient Greeks loved to compete. They held contests for everything -public speaking, painting, writing, even kissing.

But the most popular competitions were for sports, such as running, chariot racing, boxing, wrestling or throwing the discus*.

Any big event was a good excuse for a sports contest. The Greeks held races and wrestling matches at feasts and religious festivals -and funerals too. They even took javelins and discuses with them when they went to war.
