Chapter 8 A secret room "I'd forgotten how big the house is," said Adam gloomily, when they arrived back, ready to start searching.
"Wait a minute," cried Sally. "There's a blocked-out window next to our room. Perhaps there's another room up there. They sprinted up the stairs and searched along the corridor. There must be a door here somewhere... A muffled cough made Adam pause. He turned around and saw a black figure scurrying away.
Sally was busy examining an old oak cabinet. "Help me shift this," she called to Adam. Ow... that's my foot! Eventually, they moved the heavy cabinet away from the wall. There, behind it, was a secret door.
With trembling hands, Sally turned the door knob. Very slowly, the stiff door groaned open. "Wow!" exclaimed Adam. It was like stepping into a weird museum. The room was crammed full of amazing objects. Adam and Sally were about to explore when they felt an icy wind. The Midnight ghosts had arrived...
Suddenly, a heavy book flew off the bookcase. CLUNK! Then an ancient radio crackled into life. Read fast before it's too late. Adam and Sally grabbed the book and raced out of the room... straight into Max. Hi! I've got great plans for today.
For the rest of the day, Max kept his cousins very busy. We must get away. Isn't this fun! We have to read the book. Fa la la. Faldi-ladi-da. After sitting through dinner- and Max's singing -Adam and Sally finally managed to escape.
