Chapter 8

CHAPTER 8 In a perfect world either every airline would offer free texting on all international flights, OR every ten-year-old boy would have an extra $20 to blow on Wi-Fi. But that's not the world we live in, so Sadie's urgent and important message would have to wait. Instead, high above the Atlantic Ocean, a very groggy Michael continued fighting off going to sleep.

"What are we going to do once we land in Tel Aviv?" he asked his dad with a yawn. "I think our best bet is to head straight for Jerusalem," Dr. Gomez answered, also with a yawn. "We'll grab a car —it'll be less than an hour's drive." He opened up a map on the seatback table and pointed out the route. "Why didn't we just fly into Jerusalem?" Michael wondered. "Good question." Dr. Gomez noted, "It's Israel's biggest city, but doesn't have an airport. It's not that big of a deal, though, because the country isn't that big. With Haifa Airport in the north and Tel Aviv in the south, you can reach most places fairly quickly by car." Michael looked at the map as Dr. Gomez pointed out the locations of the cities. "Once we get to Jerusalem, we can visit my contact at the Antiquities Museum."

Michael nodded, then turned to gaze out the window over the moonlit Atlantic Ocean. "I know you're worried, but you should try to get some sleep," his dad said quietly. "You ready for bedtime prayers?" "Sure." Michael nestled into his miniature flight pillow and paper-thin blanket. "Dear God," Dr. Gomez prayed softly, "you tell us that instead of worrying, we should pray. Thank you for all you have done to keep us safe. We ask that you keep Merle and Pearl safe tonight and help us to find them. Please give us

your peace and guard our hearts and minds as we sleep." Before his dad could get to, "In Jesus' name, amen," Michael was out cold.
